Julian Gore!

Is it just me, or does anyone else wish that Vidal had punched Henry Miller in the head on the Dick Cavett show?

One of my very favorite YouTube clips...Vidal, Mailer, Cavett,...and Janet Flanner who drops the hammer on Gore & Norm. "Well they're here, and I'm here, and he's here and I'm growing very, very bored!"

To my discredit I'm sure, I'm not a Mailer fan, for whatever reason. Good taste, maybe. Miller, on the other hand, makes me sad in a profound way. If Gore had punched Miller, Miller would've looked up in disbelief and said, "What gives?" Mailer? "Come on, you pussy, come on!" whilst dancing around like a frat goon.

I prefer the Miller scenario, but the clip will be viewed literally dozens of times on account of this sad news.

I've always disliked Mailer. By the age of 12 I'd decided he's the first grown-up I ever wanted to kick the shit out of. No big Vidal fan either. Something about people who tell me how intellectual they are that causes me to lose interest. (I loved Cavett though, so go figure.)

I feel I need to stomach the pinheaded brainiacs if they can back it up.

But between the RPatz/KStew dustup and the Badminton 8 Men Out-esque scandal, I'm really finding it difficult to believe in anything anymore.

Alright. I'm off to Mount Giliead. When I'm back, with Christ's grace and wisdom and mercy, I may have upped my chances of surviving this winter by a good 33 percent.

If I can't trust the integrity of Chinese and Korean women's Olympic badminton I can't see much reason to trust anything.

I had to laugh when I read that she'd been carrying on with the married director for months, not ha ha laugh but more of a "so I guess it wasn't a momentary indiscretion after all" sort of laugh. (remember, until she was on VF's cover a couple of months ago I was completely unaware of her existence.) I did know who Pattinson (sp?) is though, from SNL. Seemed like a good sport when they made fun of him taking his shirt off for no reason. And I did like the way he blew that mansion the minute he heard that she was being naughty. Fuckin' right brother, get out of that shit immediately,,,,pretty sure he can find a girl who'll be satisfied with just him.

I actually own a self-portrait of Mailer called "The Last Round" --ok, portrait is an exaggeration. It's like a Bad Seymour Hirsch drawing. It's actually pretty cool. And my husband helped him try to levitate the Pentagon. Can't be all bad.

You know, it makes me sad, inexplicably. I never saw a Twiglight movie, but I loved her in her little bit in Into The Wild, and they seemed so happy. She's only 22 for God's sake -- I can imagine becoming enthralled with an older more powerful man. The idea that he's jeapordizing so much for you -- that alone is heady stuff. I know it probably is over for them, but I kind of hope in time they drift back.

I'll say this (I got back fine, by the way, so, great, another motor and 4 wheels to keep rolling, but I'll take that bet!):
1. "Julian" is a great novel.
2. Norman seemed to have a bit too much testosterone for everyone else's own good.
3. I like the 2nd Twilight movie the best, though I've only seen 2 of them, one of them all the way through.
4. KStew (has someone already coined that?): "Into The Wild" is for me a movie about heartbreak, and her last scene in it is devastating.
5. The world of professional badminton will never be the same again, ever.

I wish everyone who so much as passed him on the street would have punched Norman Mailer. As the great Flannery O'Connor might have paraphrased herself, he might have been a decent person if there'd been someone around to do so every day of his life.
