Breakfast At Wimbledon: The End Of An Era

Somehow I've never managed not to watch at least the Championship no matter where I was no matter how I was. Well, thanks to greed, probably, this will be the first year, minus an act of god, or My Mom And Dad, I will miss the men's final. ESPN3 does not seem to want to talk to my verizon bot, so tomorrow morning I'll try to listen to it on the radio.

I was trying to think of the most fun I had watching Wimbledon that didn't include watching it with my dad, because that wouldn't be fair. I have concluded with not much thought that it would have to be Eastman School Of Music, summer of 1985, Boris Becker.

This fiasco has not improved my mood, so I may have to listen, again, to the "Fiascos" podcast from TAL.

1. Serena Williams is a thug who hates tennis.
2. If the purse is to be equal amongst men and women, then does it follow that the women should be required to compete for best of 3 sets as well?

Yeah, I spent the whole morning clearing last year's storm-felled trees (you don't have to be president to do this, it turns out--anyone can) in my little sliver "down in back" with a rented chainsaw. It now looks like a different sort of wasteland back there. I'm beat.

I dulled home depot's chain to the point of uselessness, and rather than sharpen the thing (bought a nice set of files when I built my ziggurat) and buy more gas, I just returned it. The last thing I did was cut down one small tree at teh border, but lacking the juice to then cut it up much, it's sitting in an ugly way on all the stuff I cleaned up, as if there was no point to the effort at all.

I can't stop watching the Williams girls when they're on TV.

I've been meaning to tell you that I finally broke down and bought another copy of America The Book, having given the other one away to someone who clearly would never read it. Anyways, came across this gem from Corddry last night:

This is actually a pretty cool story. During the Revolutionary war, soldiers would often get very thirsty while fighting. That's where Mary Hays came in, bravely carrying pitchers of water to the soldiers, running unarmed across the battlefield as bullets and shells whizzed by her. Once during Pledge Week, the brothers made us carry thimbles full of our own urine across the Quad while screaming "Faggots!" in our faces, so I know what she went through.

1. If you read Agassi's memoir, which I highly recommend, you will realize that all pros hate tennis, and for good reason. As for the sisters Williams, they played as a doubles team for the first time in 2 years and won Wimbledon. Snaps up.

2. The length of the game isn't the issue, but ticket price could be. However, as someone pointed out recently, the level of excitement flows back and forth from womens' tennis to men's tennis, and at any given time in the future women's tennis could be the hotter ticket. It's too hard to predict so the fair thing to do is equal compensation.

3. Go Roger. Murray is just so damn gawky and I hate his footwork.

Murray up 1 set. Wow. I don't know if you found radio coverage, but I'm listening to Wimbledon Radio online HERE (I'm rooting for Murray. Tennis needs some new blood dammit!)

I had no idea tennis could be covered so well on the radio. These blokes do a fab job it it, and I love the little snippets in between games too. "How can you be eating fish and chips at a time like this?"~ "It's chicken and chips actually."

(fab job "of" it even)

Dad gummit. I'm on the radio. I was planning on avoiding NPR's hourly match updates and watch it on ABC "live", but I gots to know.

Don't laugh, but the best golf I watched was the BBC feed of the British Open last year on XM radio. Also, baseball on radio is close to sublime.

But I think I need The Farmer's Market Omelette at The Robert Evans.

Heat's breaking guys. And the week looks spectacular. I'd like to ask you guys something. There's a rage building in me with regard to my family. I'd like to share it, but I don't know if it's healthy and I don't know if I want to subject you to it.

Anyways, tonight Dan beats Captain Turner to death. Spoiler Alert Keifus!!!!!!!!!

Rundeep, equal purses is a no brainer. And as much as I love Roger, an Andy win would be cool just to see what The Sleeping Lion that is The United Kingdom Of States would do, especially on the eve of The Olympic Games Of The World.

Okay. Don't be shy.

Evened up, and the match basically starts over. I LOVE THOSE ACCENTS!!!

I used to read your movie reviews, and felt like I had to withhold comment because who the fuck am I right? I feel like it's been long enough now that I can say something without sounding like some drive-by critic. It's about these *spoiler alerts* that you provide. I feel like you're missing a key element of said alert. You're supposed to give them before, not after. It's like, I thought Soylent Green was intersting, especially the part about Soylent Green being made of people. *spoiler alert* You see what I mean? It's too late then, I've already told people that Soylent Green is people,...you already told Keifus that Dan beats Captain Turner, so, you know, the alert is spoiled.

Haven't been to Robert's in some time. Forgot what he called his "potatoes, eggs, sausage, cheese all served in a hissing skillet" entree but I always got that.

Re: venting about your family on your blog. It's your blog. Feynman's wife had some pencils made with the words "Richard darling. I Love You!~ Putsy" ~ inscribed on one facet of a whole box of pencils. Fearing embarrassment if one of his genius colleagues saw one of the pencils, Rich began scratching out the inscriptions ...one pencil at a time. His wife saw this and asked him "What do you care what other people think?"- he called that one of his life-altering moments. It's your pencil Switters.

Listening to these chaps do the match on radio is as much fun as I've ever had Wimbledon-wise. It's critical that I can detect the diff between ball hitting court and ball hitting racket. These guys are so good that I can pretty much fill in the video in my head. It's brilliant..innit? (I turned off all TV feed to my apt 2 months ago. loving it. The intertubes have everything I need.)

I'd love for Murray to win next year. I NEED Roger to beat Sampras' record for some reason. Murray can also win the Gold at the Olympics and that would make all those wacky Brits happy. (Maybe if Murray wins, they will actually let him join the All-England club, where he is currently not a member). Played on grass this morning, played just like Serena. That's a lie. *spoiler alert*. The fact you have rage won't make us like you less. At least not for long. It just makes you human.

David Marlow said...

Dang, Andy. Give us a 5th set at least.

I knew I had achieved the ultimate in the art, if you will, of reviewing movies I had not seen when I was chastised for giving away the ending to a movie (again, I had not seen) that was not the actual end of the movie, was not actually even possible given the movie itself, and involved both a character and an actor (and a character actor) who were not in the movie. THAT'S GOD-GIVEN!!! The movie? Drumroll, bright: Jerry Potter And The Gauntlet Of Fear. I think. Now I'm not sure, having subsequently seen the movie, for the most part.

I'm not ashamed to admit: When Roger beats someone, I'm happy for Roger and feel bad for his opponent; when Roger loses, I'm depressed for anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, given the tournament.

Roger "Too Good" Federer

rundeep said...

I don't think Roger even sweats. Murray was so moving though, I'm now a fan.

I'm such a dork, if ABC does run the footage at 3, I'll watch every ground stroke, including the rain delay.

David Marlow said...

Wow. Let's just say it was nice to see Andy display a nice difference in nuance betwixt genuine pride in one's country and vacant histrionical patriotism*.

*It is a known fact that this is Mitt's favorite song, because it's so autobiographical to his own life. LOOK IT UP!

rundeep said...

I'm such a dork I still have on the DVR the 2008 Final. Seriously. And I watch it, usually in February, while knitting. Top that for nerdiness!

David Marlow said...

2008? The all day affair filled with rain and sweat? The one where I called my mom and made her promise to stick with it because it would end that evening? The one that is one of the greatest tennis matches ever? The one where I perfectly timed a beer run and didn't miss a single serve?

Totally don't remember it. Who won that one again?

Isonomist said...

I love when other people complain about their families. It implies permission to complain about mine.

Keifus said...

No worries. By the time I get clued in to who dan and capt. turner are, I'll have forgotten the spoiler. Or if I remember it, I won't be thinking about it when I do watch the damn thing. Which, in conclusion, means that my employers really should throw a little more work at me.

Hey!

I've tried to post here various times over the past 3 months without success. I don't know what the problem is but it just won't go through. Just wanted to say Hey!

Topazz, you're a cyberklutz.

Hi, Topazz. I knew a rabbi in New York named Cy Burklitz. He was also an accountant. And a loan shark. And a movie producer. And a jew.
