abc's what would you do

i miss not getting abc.

dang it's cold. funny, i forgot, but you burn a lot of wood real quick. i think i'm good for a few days, but the pile really is getting skimpy.

that the networks have given up on friday night viewers means i no longer matter to advertisers.

thank you, christ jesus. i'll just watch waterworld. again.

I can't make out the doors in the picture. Is the original spring bronze weatherstripping still on the jambs? If it is, it's all flattened down from years of being compressed. Take a putty knife, or a taping blade, or even a spatula, and pooch that metal back up so it looks like a V. Mondo plastic garbage bags cut carefully make great temporary inside storm windows in rooms you're not using. Visqueen for those you are. You know all this of course, but I'm saying it anyway. Kill the drafts!

Ripping through that elm quickly. Fuckin' cold winter. Don't you dare burn that floor...

it's just a big old drafty barn. i'm living in the trailer-like addition. it's only about a 10x20 space, so once i close it off from the original house, it's pretty easy to heat up. but yeah, i've done everything to at least seal it up. don't you worry about the floors. but the drywall is history.

10 x 20 is a nice sized base of operations. Worked for this guy. You posted a pic of a one room log cabin with a loft once. Can't remember when/where....that place is awesome.

Spring is 8 short weeks away my friend.

Yeah, late January has got to be the peak, right? Looking at some miserable cold up here too.

I remember how much of his free time my dad used to spend. A bunch of weekends in the fall taking the tractor into the woods out back. He'd only harvest downed trees (partly out of a sense of environmental responsibility, and no doubt partly because it wasn't his property). 20 years later, they paved and bulldozed up some nice subdivisions. I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere.

Well, how cold is it? So cold, that when we came back from the movies on Friday and my husband started up the wood stove in the kitchen, first it started to make noises like a freight train was coming and then the black piping where it meets the ceiling started to actually glow red. This all at least 5 minutes after we had shut off all the air to bring the fire down. I had visions of exploding stove. So we had to try and hustle up all the animals (the cat was a serious pia) and call the FIre Department, who sent 3 trucks, a cop car, and an ambulance (I guess cold nights are boring round these parts). Flames shooting up out the chimney by the time they got here, but they did get here in time to keep it from getting any worse. No damage inside, minimal outside. Still don't quite know what happened. We do have the stove serviced every year before the season, but it's odd that it heated up so far, so fast.

michael, i'm trying to remember that picture. 8 weeks is an eternity. what's up with your bears?

keif, it's funny how not too long ago timber was an actual household resource. now most of the time it's a hinderance to progress, so called. i don't want to sound preachy, but waste is waste is waste.

rundeep, that scared me. afraid i have no way to account for it either. glad you're okay.

Fat guy interception killed us. Fun season. Packers are the better team.

well, i'm proud of caleb; he should hold his head high. it was a really good game. i'm looking at a really pretty stack of wood by the north door; odd how something that banal could be so comforting. i may have to pull for the jets. hope your evening is going well.

Michael said...

Kinda figured we'd lose, and I agree with you about Hanie. Played better than Collins all year, they should have plugged him in immediately after Cutler went down.

Banal? Maybe, but it made me smile too. Oh good, he's not tempted to burn 100 year old scrap.

David Marlow said...

wood pile: al's elm; logs about 8 inches in diameter; burns long, clean and hot; about 2 days worth in the trailer. scrap? gold. might end up as book shelves.

Michael said...

Speaking of book shelves. No better time to lay out some in-wall shelving units than when the drywall is off.

exactly. jess already has a design to tie into the ancient studs. supposed to get into the 20s tomorrow. practically balmy.

I cannot wait for spring. The older I get the more I hate winter. Probably coming down with S.A.D in my old age. It's gotten so that a little sunlight still visible at 5PM makes me happy. Those long nights are such a drag. How's Moonpie doing? Starting to feel like home yet? (for both of you?)

bright said...

Dad paints smiley faces on the log ends so when you look out the kitchen window, there's a whole bunch of happy staring at you through the bitter cold.

Spring is coming.

moonpie may be starting to understand that she not only can't chase down a coyote; she can't outrun one. gave me a scare this morning taking on a coyote pup; pup didn't think much of her bark or her sprint.

David Marlow said...

hey bright. abc showed blades of glory last night. i'd seen it once, but a second viewing re-confirmed the movie's genious. dads. the people most important to me it turns out, like myself, had great fathers. oh, and moonpie is under the impression that i bought that electric blanket for her.

bright said...

gah I hate the Steelers.

David Marlow said...

well, they're easy to hate. speaking of which, nbc is showing sex in the cities. sanchez is too short. and yes, i'm drawing smiley faces on the firewood in the house. with a pen. and i'll shortly put in the old vcr white fang.

rundeep said...

Isn't Pittsburgh actually in Ohio? It takes like forever to get there from here. And I'm conflicted. I loved those old Steelers teams of the 70s, Franco Harris (who looked great on the sideline!) Lynn Swann (who ran unsuccessfully for governor here), Bradshaw, the Steel Curtain. But "Big Ben" and his asshole ways have really turned me off. The Jets have a number of thugs also, but I really really wanted to see Ben drilled. Go Pack. Michael, you live in the wrong part of the world for a guy who hates winter. And yes, the lack of light is the worst part.

David Marlow said...

oh. good. more snow.

bright said...

Go make a snow angel, it helps.

David Marlow said...

it helped a little, but moonpie was, well, well she looked ashamed. she's way too smart for my own good.

My daughter introduced me to Glee over Christmas.

I don't watch tv. But I have obsessed until I have now seen the entire season.

I'm bereft that Season 2 is not on dvd.

Where are the reruns?
