protecting the right to hate

"god hates obama. thank god for dead soldiers. gays are destroying america." so they go to these funerals to protest... er... something. then they go back to their homes with central air and running water having hurt the families of those that volunteered to protect their right to hate, and store the signs in the garage next to the wetvac.

man, democracy is real tricky.

let's split some wood and try to keep our eyes on the prize.

Uh, I missed it. The office, not the Westboro opinion, which I must say is excellent. The Court went no further than it had to and the ruling is pretty confined to the facts. In essence, the Court said that the Westboro people, no matter how odious, simply picketed in a public place (1000 feet from the Church in a public area to which they had been directed by the police), in an orderly fashion. They did not disrupt the services, the testimony of the father was that he didn't even see what the picket signs said until the evening news. Though some of the sentiment was personal, the vast majority of it was in the broadest sense involving public morals. There was at the time no applicable time, place, and manner of speech restriction which the Church left unsatisfied.

Roberts did say though, and Breyer underlined, that at some point the conduct could become so personal as to no longer involve a public statement or public behavior. At that point, the First Amendment will no longer shield them from tort liability. These are not particularly law-abiding citizens. They are nutjobs. I bet they go too far in the near future.

I'm really looking forward to Will Ferrell's stint on The Office - can you imagine how awful(hilarious)he'll be as a substitute boss? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlnObIFBCY4&feature=related
