chilly tonight.

burning furniture.

anyways, spring will tease you, but she does arrive. and she's the most beautiful creature on earth, whether or not she brings rain and wind and tornadoes and frost and mud and flood. but she shows up eventually. maybe not always looking her best, but she's prettiest when she just wakes up.

Crocuses today. And robins, lots of robins. And hawks. It's that moment, you know, like in "into the wild" where he realizes it's spring? Just remember, if he had walked downriver half a mile, he'd have gotten out of the wilderness. There's always a way. Always.

Hooked up the kid's wii to netflix, and can use my sister's netflix account login to stream thousands of movies, old television shows, master piece theater - all for free. I love a bargain! Tonight I watched thirtysomething (the episode where Gary died) and the first 2 episodes of Downton Abbey. switters, if you have wireless internet and can get ahold of a nintendo wii console(any old one will do), I'll give you her password login too - netflix lets you use it on up to 5 wireless devices at once.

it's like this: i don't know if he rose on the third day, i don't have my mom's faith. but, from what i've read, he seems like he was a pretty good guy, with good intentions. and maybe if we paid more attention to the things he espoused, we'd be better people.

it's not that complicated. but i suppose it is.

it saddens me that npr's loudest critics are for the most part folks that don't listen to npr. pretty easy to take things out of context; i rely on it. call me naive, but i honestly can't think of a more self-aware, self-critical news outlet than npr, whatever that means anymore. but it might just be that i can't get "access hollywood" up here, or that "the bachelor" ends tonight. now where's my tote bag?

I stopped caring about March Madness when I started travelling to PR during the tournament. Just couldn't keep up with the games AND an active rum drink schedule. Though I confess I look at the tsunami evacuation signs differently now....

And yes, I have a sunburn, and we walked out on the pier and saw a ridiculous number of stars. And my daughter looks good in a bikini. Dear God, how am I going to survive THAT!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Back to bed now. See ya.

Cindy said...

I have finished up the first season of Modern Family and now Community. Both were pretty darn hilarious.

I'm on to Parks & Recreation, then we have Ken Burns' "The War."

For any of you who want something truly mind-bogglingly good - get a copy of the BBC series "Foyle's War" .... superb.

The other night I watched a full hour on Charlie Sheen.

I'm grateful it is Monday and I can get back to "work."

rundeep said...

How am I ever going to go back to cold wet weather? Lord. Today we went to a place called Cabo Rojo. It's the very southwestern tip of PR. There's a huge lighthouse atop some incredible cliffs overlooking the Carribbean. Then there's a path oh 800 or so feet down to the most perfect little soft white sand beach with turquoise waters. TO. DIE. FOR. I saw all these families coming in after school. Can you imagine ending your day that way every day? With dinner at a breathtakingly beautiful beach? Man. Oh.Man.

My dad died 25 years ago last week. I didn't remember, as I was taking mom to chemo that day. She didn't recall either. We had complicated relationships all around, to put it kindly. He died 4 weeks after starting chemo for a Stage IV cancer my mother never bothered to ask the origins of. It's why she wouldn't get treatment at the same place he did -- she's convinced they killed him, and she might be right. They were a couple of movie star lookers in a very small provincial town. I've been enjoying their old pics. My dad would have been astonished/appalled at my kid, though he would appreciate that I drink beer.

Even if you can't see it.

David Marlow said...

mom wondered which was worse: the cancer or the cure, such that is was. books aren't meant to be burned; they're meant to be read, especially holy books. burning books makes no sense.

rundeep said...

Only burn a book if there's nothing left and you are cold. Otherwise, if you don't like it, it makes a fine coaster. Recently read "Emperor of All Maladies, a Biography of Cancer." Very informative, engaging, amazing book. Crohns can be dealt with pretty easily, but everyone needs to learn to deal at their own pace and in their own way. Any chronic disease starts to make you feel like it (and the doctor) is deciding your fate instead of you. She's just asserting her own will in the process. Sunshine! I will be hiking with the boys in the Wissahickon.

Parable of the Sunday School Seeds.

It takes 10 days for the first sunflower seed to sprout. I get nervous and stick two more seeds in everyone's cup. By week 3 everyone but me, the organist's kid, and the homeschooled kid has sprouted. Organist's kid has been faithfully watering cups of the seeds for the kids who never come. I offer cheerful platitude about blooming in our own time. Next week, organist's kid and me are still barren (homeschooled kid's finally sprouted), so I sneak some extra plants out of other cups and transplant them into our 2 cups. Hooray! This week, all are thriving except my purloined plant, which is shriveled and dead.

David Marlow said...

Maria, I burst out laughing about the using books as drink coasters thing. My mother used to have so many library books laying around, whenever she'd return them she'd have to wash off all the dried coffee and tea circles/splashes first. Hold on to your hats folks but we had a salad of three different kinds of lettuce - the red lettuce is particularly nice this year.

Carrots in a wide variety of colors have totally captured the interest of my young nieces. I like them raw or slightly steamed.

There are enough sugar snap peas to feed three families. I get about four cups off two bushes every four days.

Broccoli is the new zucchini. We've had boatloads.

Chard is unbelievable. Even just the one row is producing enough that two families can't eat it all.

I am going to have to go get the strawberries in the middle of the night and duke it out with the rabbits.

Irises are up and showering us with their outrageous gorgeousness. Amaryllis bulbs are about to burst.

And switters, this is for you, I still cannot grow a single tomato. Well, I can usually get a single teeny-tiny cherry tomato. That's it.

Mushroom compost is fantasy dirt. And this is the one brief window of time that I absolutely love living in Florida.

Snowing. I want to crawl into Cindy's latest comment and live there.

i may have mentioned this before, but ohio weather really seems to agree with moonpie. her coat is so shiny, and not just because of all the hamburger grease she gets. oh sure she'll come back from the meadow covered in burrs, but somehow she rids herself of them. i believe she is the reincarnation of crackers, my dad's favorite.

funny how a wave from a kind school bus driver on a rural road while i'm checking my mail can make one's day. the warm southern wind doesn't hurt much.

Tia - that's so sweet!! :)

I sauteed the very best Swiss Chard tonight for dinner, I made myself moan.

I also used garlic that we still have hanging up from last year's harvest. I have about 3 cloves left.

These year we also have onions.

We may be driving through New England in late May ... will the weather still be cool?

Sunny and warm today, though not as warm as Monday, when my car told me it was 80. But then, it had been sitting in the sun. Daffodils are just ready to bloom, saw some weeping cherries in full bloom today. Ours is waiting patiently. Cindy, the difference between Tia and me is that she wants to crawl in your comment, and I'd like to hit you (or myself, really) with a carrot. Early spring lettuces are always the best. Not feeling really up to snuff, and I've been giving the boys short shrift on their walks. The little one puts on his sad face, and I can't take it. My daughter is in the throes of Lacrosse season (which is how I really know it's spring.) She plays on a school team and a club team all spring, and I drive her around while she changes uniforms in the car. In the summer, she'll be on another travel team which is, I think, the kind that college coaches actually come and watch eventually. I can't believe that has already begun, but there you have it. Grass courts open in May, and I'm counting the days....

LOL rundeep! I would gladly drive to Philly so you could hit me with a carrot, as long as we would get a chance to have lunch again! :)

Have fun with Lacrosse season! My equivalent was Horse Shows - hunter/jumper ....and let me say I look BACK on it with fondness. :)

Totally buy Beck as a self-hating sort. Trump fired his dignity. Cindy, love to do lunch again. Hope we can do that without my having to interrupt for work this time.

I still like Obama, dammit. I just don't say it out loud anymore. The level of outright hatred, scorn and vindictiveness shown towards him from the moment he took office was something I'd never witnessed in my lifetime. The level of begrudgement, hostility and disrespect from the Republican members of congress and senate too. It seems as if from the moment he took office he had impossible cards stacked against him; the overwhelming financial crisis, the Health Care Bill, gulf oil spill, and they just kept on coming. When he shows thoughtful deliberation on something it's translated as being too hesitant to act. When he acts, he's accused of ramming the healthcare bill down the American public's throat. One thing that always stops me cold is imagining the alternative: what a McCain/Palin Presidency would have been like.

Aw topazz, I like Obama too! I do say it out loud and finally put the bumper sticker on my car! :)

He's not perfect. He's still my choice. I hate some of the things he has done in office, and really love others.

Personally, I think that is as it should be. I'd be worried if he was doing everything I wanted LOL!

I think if I could have one wish it would be to get us out of the Middle East in any military fashion. Unfortunately our corporations need that kind of security because the rape they're perpetrating on other country's resources seems to piss off those other country's people.

switters - I cannot agree with you more regarding Gleen Beck. I will mark your words, and work hard not to let my distaste for the man eat away my insides.

obama will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents, up there with jefferson and adams. and he may be related to jefferson (chortle!) doing my stupid taxes online. can't get hold of my brother jess. today is my brother al's 48th birthday; can't get hold of him either. moon and i headed into town. i'm in love with tina fey.
